A Special Events in a Special Place

Our very favourite place to visit in all Libya was the beautiful oasis village of Ghadames. We could always be sure of receiving a warm welcome from the villagers and of learning something interesting about the Tuaregs who live there.

Most of our visits were restful affairs but every now and then we would arrive on a special holiday and were able to join in the celebrations.

The pictures below show one such occasion.

Most of the inhabitants crowded into the main square

Unlike other Libyan women, Tuareg women can appear in public. They wear bright clothes, not the white barrakan and they show their faces.
The men tied ropes between two palm trees to form a giant swing.
Mustafa Gibril was brave enough to try it out, but I was too chicken.

A band played in the square ...

before moving into the old slave market.

A Ghadamsi friend dancing in traditional Tuareg dress. (He was our student and a member of the secret police.)
